What does the word “pumi” mean?

Unfortunately, no-one knows. There are several theories as to where the word “pumi” derives from; however, none of them seem to give a satisfying answer. What we know for sure is that the first record of this word dates back to 1795, and that it is probably a blend of other words.

Pumi people in China, a stamp“Pumi” is also the name of an ethnic minority of some 30,000 people in China’s Yunnan Province. The Pumi name means “white men”. The Pumi speak a language related to Tibetan and have a similar lifestyle to Tibetans. They also have their own simple written language based on Tibetan letters. Part of the Pumi accepts lama Buddhism; the others have a polytheistic religion and sacrifice to their ancestors. There is no relationship between these Pumis and our pumis.
